Supreme Commander 2 is a good game for a beginner. Falconoffury This is a great suggestion. Not only is it accessible, its fun too. You shouldnt be scared of starcraft 2 though. It's not particularly deep or anything. It just has a fanatical competitive scene with people who actually memorize a bunch of build orders and actually calculate their actions per minute.

Dawn of war and supcom 2 are more fun though. And if you get used to shpcom2 you can move on to supreme commander forged alliance for a more rewarding experience. I wouldn't suggest starting to game on PC with RTSs if you can't dedicate half an hour or one hour each session. That said, if I were to suggest a casual RTS, go for Star Ruler or Gratuitous Space Battle, on sale now on Steam for 5€ and 10€. I didnt want to limit it to rts, just i have had fun with them before and its the only genre ive played on pc before. Mostly a console gamer but i am the laptop most of the day so thought id look into a few games. I dont like fps or multiplayer only games. If the game has good multiplayer online as a bonus then cool but am mainly after a good one player game. I enjoyed civ 4 but each time id play took ages so made me not want to play it as much as i knew i didnt have hours free, just a little here and there.

I would recommend: - StarCraft 2. One of the things that make Blizzard one of the premiere game development studios is their ability to make games that are accessible and intuitive. SC2 is a game that is easy to learn and hard to master. - Company of Heroes. Great WW2 RTS. The focus on squad based combat works very well. A great game, especially if you enjoy movies like Brothers in Arms or Saving Private Ryan.

- World in Conflict. A slightly different take on RTS's.

It forgoes the traditional base building and resource gathering and instead focuses exclusively on the fighting. It also does a great use of its 80ies cold war setting and military hardware. I remember I played SC1 before rage quitting due to me jumping into the online scene 2 hours after starting the SP campaign and failing the escort missions:P I also hated the ugly graphics. But I decided to buy SC2 online (waiting for it now:)) and the game looks gorgeous and this time I will actually make an attempt to get good. I recommend the Starcraft series. I did love the races, novelty, and potential depth of the SC1. So I encourage you to join me 8) I'm pretty bad at RTS, but I do like them. Open avi files on mac.
