However, for ongoing security, there is no guarantee with freeware, and usually that’s exactly what you get. The pro vendors – McAfee, Symantec, Kaspersky, etc. – have hundreds of Security Engineers and a network of millions more volunteers searching out malware all day, every day. They are part of a world-wide network advising governments and miliarty on Internet Security. They are the ones that found and decoded Stuxnet.

When you get in trouble with their products, they are all over it until you are clean. With freeware, nobody’s there to help you.

The pay products update several times a day. There are thousands or tens of thousands of new threats every day., These professional products will keep the bad guys out in the first place, not just try to find them after the fact. And even if you find malware already inside your system, it’s by no means certain that you can remove it, or all the children it has spawned.
